Zen Tapes and WCBN FM Present: Pressed And, It is rain in my face., Dreampeter, & Known Moons at Work Gallery

Posted on: August 10th, 2012 by Matt Gilles

Tonight, we have the utmost pleasure of curating a show in our lovely home of Ann Arbor, MI (pours an entire beer of our proverbial 4-pack out for recently relocated Kohwi), and we’d really love to share it with you!

Helping us host the show is our favorite freeform radio community in the entire world, Ann Arbor’s own WCBN 88.3 FM. Doors are at 8PM, and Work Gallery is located at 306 S. State St. The lineup is:

Pressed And (Brooklyn by way of North Carolina): Warped and addictive, Pressed And is a duo that stretches and chops samples (often of themselves) into heady beat-laden collages.

It is rain in my face. (Also Brooklyn by way of North Carolina): Half of Pressed And, IIRIMF is Mat Jones’ solo project. Expect stuck-in-your-head-for-days-ers, introspective repeaters, and hip-hop rhythms.

Dreampeter (Ann Arbor): Lo-fi bedroom pop spiritbrothers jamming on synths. It’s sad, so hopefully you hate yourself.

Known Moons (Ann Arbor):  Textural bliss. Josh Bay creates vivid sonic collages and adapts them to a live setup that showcases the sweet sounds of bowed guitar.

Here’s some

mp3: It is rain in my face.: “Duck In A Row”

GRL MTN Presents: Aaural II

Posted on: July 17th, 2012 by Matt Gilles

I hate to pull our own chain like this, but we’re extremely proud to be expanding the Ann Arbor-based GRL MTN music collective (of which we at Zen Tapes are all members of) to some new friends. To usher in our extended family, we’ve created Aaural II, a compilation comprised of exclusive tracks all across the board.

As we continue to evolve, we’d like to give you a permanent invitation into our ever-morphing world through the machinery of a brand new website, which has been painstakingly created from the ground up by our own Cory Levinson (!!). It’s simply GRLMTN.com. Go figure.

We really hope that you enjoy the new homestead of our music and that you have some great times on your own accord with Aaural II playing somewhere in the background. For now, enjoy a few tracks from our newly indoctrinated friends:

mp3: OldKid: “Urban (P)light”

mp3: Known Moons: “The Structures の 様 Child”

mp3: Samn Johnson: “Pictured Rocks”

P.S.- we even have t-shirts for sale!

Known Moons: “གར་འགྲོ།”

Posted on: January 30th, 2012 by Matt Gilles

གར་འགྲོ། (Gar ‘Dro) – “Where does it go? Where does it disappear?”

Textural and gradual, གར་འགྲོ། is a nearly 30-minute improvised ambient piece by Known Moons. If you’d like to escape the coming week’s cacophony, this is the calm that you need.

Known Moons is Ann Arbor’s Josh Bay. For more of his art, both aural and visual, visit his blog.
