Purple paints a dark, empty world with his unique take on downtempo production. His latest progress the somber and largely instrumental work of his former EP with a newfound vigor as well as a human element, vocals.  “Look Innocent” is a mean pitched-down brute while “The Club” showcases the voice of a delicate rose amidst haunting reverb and a menacing hip hop beat.

He puts on a pretty mean Enya cover, too.

For those who want nothing more but to dim their light into the nether of conscious obscurity, Loathes‘ debut self-titled EP is a pristine world in which to awaken.

Slowly sifting through wistful recordings of the past and calm drones, the self-titled work is somewhere between the regal retrospect of memory and the ethereal world of the imaginary. Each of the seven tracks feel like a simple scene within a greater work, so I am delighted to present you a single track version Loathes below.

If Ricky Eat Acid‘s prior release, Seeing Little Ghosts Everywhere, was a collection of enchanted places enlightened by adventitious spirits, Ambien Music is the soundtrack of an empty house, haunted by decayed memories. Each movement gradually reveals a calm abyss of languished drone, a space so sparse that minute details seem illuminating and significant. The subtleties of these pieces are products of Sam Ray’s creative process, in which he had gradually morphed the constant tones present throughout the album by haphazardly attacking the .wav files of the layered drones themselves, resulting in deformed replicas of the files’ past selves.

This may be the last release for Sam under the Ricky Eat Acid monicker, or maybe he still has something special up his sleeve. Either way, I’m quite grateful to have something beautiful to drift off to sleep to.
