Kyle Bobby Dunn: Ways of Meaning

Posted on: May 5th, 2011 by Macklin Underdown

For the ambient junkies out there, New York/Canadian composer Kyle Bobby Dunn has created an instant classic. Dunn’s full-length album, Ways of Meaning, comes out on May 23rd on Desire Path Recordings, a new label focused on “microambient/field recording/modern classical compositions”. They’re pressing 500 12-inches, including 30 special art edition vinyls, so scoop it up quick when it comes out later this month.
I, as well as the rest of Zen Tapes, was in awe of the newest effort from Dunn after a first listen. Its ethereal drones reflect a timeless yet immediately personal feeling, as the 6-track, 40-minute album offers a solitary instance of meditation for the listener. “Statuit” is an intensely beautiful moment in time, which fits perfectly before “Canyon Meadows” (a microcosm of the fluidity heard on the album presented here for your previewing pleasure). Ways of Meaning is gorgeously composed and well thought out – it is as much refreshing as it is engrossing, making this recent work by Dunn a great artistic success.
